More cyber threats loom 11 December 2009 (New Strait Times) KUALA LUMPUR: The number of cyber threats reported this year has risen by 87 per cent compared with last year. But Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Fadillah Yusof attributed the large increase to a better awareness of the Cyber 999 complaints hotline. After handing certificates to participants in the second Cyber Drill exercise, code-named X-Maya2, organised with the National Security Council, he said: "Cyber security affects society just like any other threat. We are working closely with the National Security Council to identify ways to protect and recover from cyber attacks in future." Reports of cyber threats are compiled by the MyCert Department, a part of the national cyber security specialists Cyber Security Malaysia. And based on the statistics, Fadillah said the ministry would continue to increase awareness through education, and the implementation of cyber security tools. He added that cyber threats stem from economic and political reasons or even hackers out to prove a point. "Such threats are real, and the public need the skills and knowledge to tackle them." |
